Elementary Peer Tutoring English
|
There are many benefits and numerous advantages to elementary peer tutoring English instruction. English is an essential subject that all students need in order to obtain their education. Some students may have difficulty with this subject while others may excel. Peer tutoring allows those students who are good at English to help those who are struggling. Many students are able to relate better to one another than they are to a teacher, tutor or other adult. Becoming a peer tutor allows a student to take on responsibility and serve their fellow students in a useful way.
Many schools offer peer tutoring programs for students who want to participate. There may be academic requirements that must be met before a student can take part in such a program. If you are a student or the parent of a student interested in peer tutoring a good first stop is the guidance counselors office. They can tell you whether or not there is such a program available at the school. Even if there is no peer tutoring program in place, students may be able to put one together with the approval of the school. There may not even need to be a formal program in order for one student to provide another with help in English or other subjects.
Some schools have tutoring programs where students without disabilities offer help to students with disabilities. These programs are beneficial because the student doing the tutoring acts as a peer rather than an authority figure. In this case there are classes that must be completed in order for the student to learn the skills necessary for managing the needs of the disabled individual. These programs help disabled students interact with their peers and participate in activities they may not have been able to do before. They also help remove the stigma that is unfortunately often associated with the disabled.
Elementary peer tutoring English can help students learn responsibility and sharpen their own skills while helping others. Students who start tutoring their peers at a young age may go on to further success in the higher grades and may even go on to pursue a career in tutoring or teaching. Taking an active leadership role can not only prepare a student for their future academic career but also their career outside of school. It teaches valuable skills that are applicable in the 'real world' and gives the student a sense of accomplishment and pride in themselves and their community.
